Firefighters remain on the scene at Conwy Mountain this morning as efforts continue to bring a major wildfire under control.

The blaze, which broke out yesterday afternoon (Sunday, July 12), led to a major emergency response involving multiple agencies after flames spread across the mountainside.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews, supported by other emergency services, worked through the day and overnight to tackle the fire, protect nearby communities and establish firebreaks.

Residents in the Capelulo area were evacuated as a precaution, with a rest centre made available, while Sychnant Pass Road and Old Conway Road remain closed.

In its latest update this morning, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters continue to fight the fire, maintain firebreaks and monitor conditions as temperatures rise.

Resources currently deployed include six fire engines, three narrow access appliances, a wildfire unit, an Incident Command Unit and operational officers. The level of resources will continue to be reviewed throughout the day.

The incident is being managed through a co-ordinated multi-agency response involving emergency services and partner organisations.

There is currently no requirement for further evacuations, but it remains too early to say when residents evacuated from Capelulo will be able to return home.

North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service will contact affected residents directly if the situation changes and access arrangements are needed.

Elsewhere, firefighters remain in attendance at Braichmelyn Forestry near Bethesda, while incidents in the Brynford and Harlech areas are being re-inspected this morning.

Head of Prevention at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Jody McEachern, said:

“Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout yesterday and overnight responding to a number of significant wildfire incidents across North Wales.

“Significant work continues at Conwy Mountain and we will continue to monitor conditions closely throughout the day.

“I would like to thank local communities for their patience and co-operation, and our firefighters, Control Room staff, partner agencies for their ongoing support.”

Members of the public are being urged to continue avoiding affected areas.

Residents in Dwygyfylchi and Penmaenmawr are advised to keep windows and doors closed if they are affected by smoke and to follow advice from Public Health Wales.
