RGC booked a home semi-final in the Super Rygbi Cymru Cup Plate competition with their most emphatic performance of the season, running in eight tries in a commanding 54–19 victory over Carmarthen Quins at Stadiwm CSM on Saturday.
In wet and slippery conditions, handling was always likely to prove decisive, but it was RGC who adapted quickest. Fly-half Billy McBryde set the tone early with a pinpoint kick to touch, and from the resulting lineout the Gogs went to work. Pedr Jones powered over for the opening try, with McBryde adding the extras.
Quins responded after Delwyn Jones was shown a yellow card for a late tackle. Gabe McDonald crossed to level the scores, converted by Ifan Davies, before Dylan Richards stepped inside to give the visitors the lead.
RGC, however, quickly regained control. Connor Dever sniped over from close range and Dion Jones raced clear after slick handling opened up space. McBryde’s flawless boot kept the scoreboard ticking as the hosts began to pull away.
Delwyn Jones made amends for his earlier sin bin when he crossed for RGC’s fourth try, and shortly before the break Sam Williams powered over to cap a dominant first-half display. By half-time, the Gogs had built a commanding advantage.
The rain continued to fall in the second half, but RGC’s intensity did not drop. Delwyn Jones grabbed his second after reacting quickest to a charged-down kick, while the pack began to assert real authority at scrum time.
Carmarthen found a moment of inspiration when Jac Howells intercepted a loose pass and sprinted the length of the field to score, but any hope of a comeback was quickly extinguished. Man of the Match Pedr Jones powered through defenders for another try before Osian Burt showed his pace out wide to complete the rout.
McBryde’s near-perfect kicking display ensured RGC’s dominance was fully reflected on the scoreboard, sealing their most comprehensive win of the campaign.
The result means RGC will now host a Plate semi-final at Stadiwm Eirias, a significant boost for the North Wales side as they look to take another step towards silverware.
Speaking after the game, Billy McQueeny said the performance had been about turning strong displays into points. He said securing a home semi-final was a huge incentive and stressed that opportunities to reach finals do not come around often, making it vital the squad seizes the moment.
With confidence building and a home crowd behind them next weekend, RGC now stand just one win away from a cup final.
