Colwyn Bay’s European dream ended in heartbreak earlier today as they were beaten 5–3 on penalties by Penybont in a tense play-off semi-final at the Blue Turtle Arena.
In front of a crowd of 1,539, the Seagulls pushed all the way but were left to rue missed chances, with the tie ultimately decided from the spot after a goalless 90 minutes.
Clear-cut opportunities were few and far between in a cagey first half. Nathan Peate headed wide from a George Hughes corner, while Jordan Davies sent a free-kick high over the bar as both sides struggled to test the goalkeepers.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Davies again off target from a set-piece and a header, while Peate also failed to hit the mark with another aerial effort.
Penybont came closest to breaking the deadlock when Chris Venables found space, but his header was comfortably gathered by Bay keeper Alex Brown. At the other end, Davies saw a driven effort pushed away for a corner by Luke Armstrong after earlier firing wide.
The game’s defining moment almost came with the final kick. Armstrong raced off his line to block an initial shot, only for the ball to fall to Jamie Cumming on the edge of the box—but with the goal gaping, he fired wide, a miss that would prove costly.
With nothing to separate the sides, the match went to penalties. Aaron Williams, George Hughes and Lewis Sirrell all converted for Colwyn Bay, but Davies saw his effort saved.
Penybont were flawless from the spot, with Chris Venables, Nathan Wood, Owen Pritchard and Noah Daley all scoring, before Clayton Green calmly slotted the decisive penalty to send the visitors through.
For Colwyn Bay, it was an afternoon of what might have been—so close to the final, yet ultimately falling just short in the cruellest fashion.
