Llandudno RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat was launched on Friday after an emergency beacon was activated around four nautical miles north of the Great Orme.
HM Coastguard received the alert from the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, known as an EPIRB, at around 11.39am and tasked lifeboats from both Llandudno and Moelfre to investigate.
Llandudno’s volunteer crew headed towards the reported position, but shortly after both lifeboats were launched, Holyhead Coastguard established that the activation had been a false alarm.
The crews were stood down, with Llandudno’s lifeboat returning to the station and being safely recovered.
There were no casualties.
The RNLI says EPIRBs are an important piece of safety equipment, as they can give rescuers the location of a vessel in an emergency. Any accidental activation should be reported to the relevant authorities as soon as possible, to avoid an unnecessary search and rescue response.
