The Emergency Department at Ysbyty Gwynedd has been recognised for its efforts to reduce its environmental impact after receiving Bronze accreditation through the Royal College of Emergency Medicine GreenED programme.

The national scheme supports emergency departments across the UK to lower their carbon footprint while maintaining high standards of patient care. Ysbyty Gwynedd is among a number of hospitals in Wales to be acknowledged in the latest round of awards.

Over the past year, staff at the Bangor-based hospital have introduced a range of initiatives aimed at embedding sustainability into everyday practice. Measures include reducing paper use, lowering computer brightness to cut electricity consumption, and adopting greener prescribing practices, such as switching from injectable to oral medications where clinically appropriate.

The department has also taken steps to cut emissions linked to staff travel by enabling more home working and moving teaching sessions and meetings online. Other changes include composting food waste, introducing reusable or recyclable cutlery and crockery, and reducing reliance on single-use plastics through measures such as plastic-free tea bags and recycling walking aids.

Where measured, the changes have already delivered an estimated annual saving of around 12,500 kgCO2e and £15,000, with further environmental benefits expected.

Dr Leesa Parkinson, Emergency Department Consultant who has led the project, said the accreditation reflects a collective effort across the department.

She said: “This accreditation reflects the collective effort of our entire team to make meaningful changes that reduce our environmental impact without compromising patient care.

“Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility, and it has been fantastic to see colleagues from across the department – including clinical, administrative, pharmacy and housekeeping teams – come together to support this work.

“While we are proud to have achieved Bronze status, this is just the beginning. There is still more we can do, and we are committed to continuing this journey and building on the progress we’ve made so far.”

The department is now exploring further improvements, including introducing paper tourniquets and medicine cups, reusable suture kits, and reducing unnecessary procedures such as cannulation and blood tests. Plans are also in place to expand the use of QR codes for patient information to further cut paper use.

Staff across all roles within the Emergency Department have contributed to the changes, reflecting a shared commitment to more sustainable healthcare for communities across North Wales.

Residents across North Wales are being reminded that stalking and harassment can affect anyone, as new specialist support roles are introduced at the Victim Help Centre in St Asaph.

The development comes as Andy Dunbobbin, the elected Police and Crime Commissioner responsible for overseeing policing, community safety, and victim services across the region, visited the centre to meet two newly appointed caseworkers. His visit coincides with the start of National Stalking Awareness Week (April 20–26).

The annual campaign, led by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, aims to raise awareness of stalking and harassment, while promoting education and support for victims.

The Victim Help Centre, commissioned by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, provides free and confidential support to anyone affected by crime in North Wales, regardless of whether incidents have been reported to police.

The introduction of two new posts – a Victim’s Voice Caseworker and an Independent Stalking Advocate Caseworker (ISAC) – is intended to strengthen that support and improve the experience of victims navigating the criminal justice system.

Cathy Griffiths has taken on the ISAC role, specialising in cases of non-domestic stalking, where there has been no prior intimate relationship between victim and perpetrator. The position addresses a previously identified gap in provision, offering tailored support including safety planning, guidance on engaging with police, and advice on managing the wider impact of stalking on everyday life.

Meanwhile, Sue Davies has been appointed as Victim’s Voice Caseworker, focusing on ensuring that victims’ experiences help shape services. Her role includes overseeing feedback initiatives such as the North Wales Victim’s Panel, established in 2022, and engaging with schools, colleges and community groups to raise awareness of available support.

Mr Dunbobbin said stalking can have a “devastating impact” on victims, affecting their safety, wellbeing and ability to carry out daily activities without fear.

He added that investing in specialist roles ensures victims receive dedicated support and that their voices are heard throughout their journey.

Senior Operations Manager at the centre, Sioned Jacobsen, described the new roles as a “hugely welcome addition,” highlighting the anxiety and fear often experienced by victims of stalking.

She said the caseworkers can provide practical advice and reassurance, including guidance on personal safety and how individuals may choose to inform employers or education providers about their situation.

The enhancements to the service reflect a wider effort to ensure victims across North Wales have access to the support they need, while also increasing understanding of stalking as a serious and often hidden crime.

Further information about the Victim Help Centre is available via Victim Support North Wales.

Organisers are seeking a creative practitioner to lead and oversee a family-friendly sand art competition taking place on the town’s promenade on Saturday, April 25. The activity will form part of a wider day of events marking the unveiling of the much-anticipated statue, celebrating the life and legacy of then late Monty Python star, who had strong connections to the area.

The successful applicant will be responsible for encouraging participation, supporting families and individuals as they create their sand art pieces, and producing their own work alongside attendees. The aim is to create an inclusive and engaging atmosphere, suitable for all ages, while adding a creative highlight to the day’s celebrations.

The session will run from 12pm until 4.30pm, with a £300 day rate offered for the role.

Landowners across North Wales are being urged to seek expert advice before carrying out any work in rivers and streams, as environmental officials warn that well-intentioned changes can often lead to costly and long-lasting damage.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) says routine work such as clearing gravel, reshaping riverbanks or straightening channels is sometimes undertaken to protect farmland or manage flooding. However, without proper guidance, these interventions can quickly have the opposite effect—accelerating erosion, increasing flood risk downstream and damaging fragile habitats.

In areas such as the Conwy, Dee and Clwyd catchments, where rivers cut through farmland and communities, NRW says even small alterations to a watercourse can have significant knock-on effects. Changes upstream can influence flooding in villages and towns downstream, while also impacting fish spawning grounds and wildlife habitats that are already under pressure.

The organisation is reminding landowners that most work in or near rivers requires formal permission, either from NRW or the relevant local authority. Carrying out work without consent could constitute an offence and leave landowners open to enforcement action, stop notices and potentially expensive restoration work.

NRW specialist advisors say they are increasingly called out only after problems have already developed, when reversing damage is often difficult or impossible.

Francesca Sanchez, Specialist Advisor for Freshwater Habitats and Species at NRW, said early engagement can prevent issues escalating.

“We’re asking landowners to get in touch with us before they start any work in a river or stream. It’s genuinely in their best interest to do so,” she said. “Far too often, we hear about these activities only after something has gone wrong, and by that point landowners could face stop notices, costly restoration and enforcement action. A simple call at the start could prevent all of that.”

She added that NRW aims to support landowners in finding practical solutions that balance land management needs with environmental protection.

“We want to help landowners do things properly – in a way that protects their land, avoids damage to wildlife and doesn’t create problems for their neighbours. Getting it right first time is always easier and cheaper than putting it right afterwards.”

NRW also highlighted concerns over the loss of natural river features such as gravel shoals, which have declined significantly across Wales over the past century. These features are particularly important in North Wales rivers, where they provide essential spawning habitat for fish and help maintain the natural flow and stability of river systems.

Landowners planning any work in or near a watercourse are being urged to contact NRW for advice before starting. Officials say a simple check can help ensure the correct permissions are in place and prevent unintended environmental damage.

Advice is available by calling 0300 065 3000 or emailing enquiries@naturalresourceswales.gov.uk.

Three talented young chefs from Coleg Llandrillo have made history—and brought home top honours—after reaching the finals of a prestigious UK-wide culinary competition.

Tesni Young (18), Hugo Loh (17) and Arthur Kinnerley-Williams (17), all studying Level 3 Professional Cookery, became the first Welsh college team to reach the final stages of the Zest Quest Asia. Competing in London over two intense days, they went head-to-head with teams from seven other colleges across the UK.

Not only did they make history by qualifying, they also returned home with two major awards. The trio won Best Use of a Panasonic Accelerated Combination Oven—earning the college a new oven along with a bespoke masterclass and a unique Dashi journey in Japanese Kaiseki cuisine with Chef Akemi.

They also secured Best Use of Lee Kum Kee Oyster Sauce, winning a three-month supply of premium ingredients and a live tutorial delivered back at the college.

During the competition, the students delivered a polished 20-minute presentation on their dishes and the East Asian region they represented, complete with a themed table display. They then had just two hours to produce a technically demanding four-course menu, all while being questioned by judges—showcasing not only their culinary skills, but also their organisation, teamwork and ability to perform under pressure.

Zest Quest Asia, launched in 2013, is designed to challenge college teams to demonstrate their creativity and understanding of Asian cuisine. This year’s achievement marks a significant milestone, with Coleg Llandrillo putting Welsh culinary talent firmly on the map.

Lecturer Glen Hughes praised the trio’s dedication, highlighting the countless hours they spent practising in their own time. He said their commitment and professionalism shone through at every stage of the competition.

The success adds to a growing list of achievements for the college and its parent group, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai. In recent years, students across the group have excelled in national skills competitions, with hospitality and catering learners regularly reaching UK finals and earning industry recognition. The college has also invested heavily in state-of-the-art training kitchens and facilities, helping students gain real-world experience and compete at the highest level.

This latest triumph reinforces Coleg Llandrillo’s reputation as a centre of excellence for hospitality training in North Wales—producing the next generation of chefs ready to make their mark on the industry.

For those inspired by Tesni, Hugo and Arthur’s success, a wide range of catering and hospitality courses are available through Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, offering hands-on training in professional-standard environments.

Wales' Rugby League Wheelchair Squad is on the brink of a historic World Cup campaign - but without urgent financial backing, some of the nation's top athletes could be forced to miss out simply because they cannot afford to play.

The team needs to raise thousands of pounds to ensure every selected player can compete, starting with the Celtic Cup in Edinburgh this May, their only competitive preparation before the global tournament, which takes place in Wollongong, Australia, this autumn.

Players and staff are currently being asked to self-fund their places at a cost of around £250 each.

Team manager Steve Abel has seen talented athletes withdraw previously because of exactly this kind of financial pressure.

"It's incredibly tough to ask athletes to pay to represent their country," said Steve, who is leading Wales at a World Cup for the first time.

"They already give everything - their time, energy, and commitment - and then face the added burden of funding their own travel and accommodation. It shouldn't be this way. I'm determined it won't happen again."

Steve, who previously officiated at four World Cups before stepping into management, knows better than most what it takes to compete at the highest level - and what is at stake if Wales arrive underprepared.

The Celtic Cup, featuring Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, is not just a warm-up. It is the only chance this squad has to build momentum, test combinations, and arrive in Australia ready to compete.

Despite the financial strain, belief within the camp is sky-high.

Only 12 players will travel to Australia, and the squad - drawn from top clubs including North Wales Crusaders, Leeds Rhinos, South Wales Jets, Midlands Hurricanes, Sheffield Eagles and Wigan Warriors - is hungry to prove Wales belongs among the very best.

From lightning-fast playmakers to powerful, hard-hitting competitors, the group blends experience, resilience, and game-changing ability.

"We're not going to Australia just to take part," said Steve.

"We've got a hugely talented squad, experienced coaches, and an incredible group of volunteers - we're a family.

“We genuinely believe we can compete with the world's best and do Wales proud.”

Wheelchair rugby league is one of the fastest-growing formats in global sport, open to men and women, boys and girls, and athletes of all backgrounds, and Wales has been at the forefront since its earliest international days.

Built on passion, physicality, and teamwork, it embodies everything associated with Welsh pride and identity.

But with no central funding from government and little resources available to sporting bodies, that family needs you!

Dawn Roberts-McCabe, Volunteer for Fundraising and Sponsorship, added: “I’m proud to give my time to ensure every prospective athlete can focus on training to become the best version of themselves and not have to worry about financial barriers.

“It would break my heart if a talented player had to let their World Cup dreams go because they had to choose between playing and paying.”

Businesses, sponsors, and supporters across Wales are being urged to step forward now. Whether through sponsorship, donation, or simply spreading the word, every contribution brings this squad one step closer to the World Cup stage - and to a moment that could inspire a generation.

To support the team or discuss sponsorship opportunities, email Dawn at droberts-mccabe@walesrugbyleague.co.uk.

Police are urging residents across Anglesey to remain vigilant following a spate of burglaries reported over the weekend.

Officers are investigating four separate incidents that took place on Sunday, April 12, in the areas of Amlwch, Benllech and Pentraeth.

North Wales Police say enquiries are ongoing and are now appealing for anyone who may have seen suspicious activity to come forward.

Anglesey District Support Sergeant Matt Bentley said officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the affected areas on Sunday afternoon and may have witnessed unusual behaviour or captured footage on CCTV, dashcams or doorbell cameras.

He also urged residents to take simple but effective steps to protect their homes.

“I would encourage residents to take precautions to improve their home security by keeping windows and doors locked, leaving a light on in the evenings, and keeping valuable items out of sight,” he said.

“Please share this advice with elderly residents or neighbours who are not on social media.”

Police say community awareness will be key as investigations continue, with officers increasing reassurance patrols in the affected areas.

A writer from North Wales is set to take centre stage at one of the world’s most famous literary gatherings, as the Hay Festival unveils its Writers at Work cohort for 2026.

Among the ten selected rising talents is Ben Huxley, a Colwyn Bay-based writer and journalist whose growing reputation is putting the region firmly on the literary map.

The prestigious programme runs alongside the Hay Festival from May 21 to 31 in Hay-on-Wye—often dubbed the “town of books”—and forms part of a globally renowned event that attracts leading writers, thinkers, politicians and performers from across the world. Now in its 39th year, the festival features more than 600 events, blending literature with discussions on global issues, politics, science, history and the arts, alongside music, comedy and family activities.

For those selected for Writers at Work, it offers a unique, fully-funded 10-day immersion into the publishing world, with workshops, mentoring and direct access to agents, editors and established authors.

For North Wales, Huxley’s inclusion is a standout moment. A graduate of Bangor University, he has written extensively on video games and culture for major outlets including Radio Times, TechRadar and Live Science, while also contributing to the mental health charity Safe in our World. He previously took part in Literature Wales’ Representing Wales programme, has completed his first novel, and has had short fiction published in a Welsh anthology—marking him as one to watch.

He joins a diverse and talented group of writers from across Wales. Cardiff-based Sophie Calon, whose memoir Long Going became a breakout success, is among the cohort, alongside Steffan Wilson-Jones, a bilingual writer and theatre producer originally from the Vale of Clwyd.

Also selected are Holly Müller, an established novelist and musician living in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park; Naomi Pearce, whose work blends art, ecology and identity; and Silvia Rose, a writer from Eryri drawing on myth, travel and heritage.

The line-up continues with Emily Paradice-Ruan, a Swansea-based writer and illustrator exploring themes of belonging; Carys Shannon, a novelist whose work has already been broadcast on BBC Radio 4; Stacey Taylor, who has been mentored through Penguin Random House’s WriteNow scheme; and Rolant Tomos, a Dolgellau-born writer and filmmaker with published novels in Welsh.

Together, they represent a snapshot of modern Welsh writing—spanning genres, languages and backgrounds—brought together for an intensive period of creative development.

Organisers say the programme is about nurturing talent and creating opportunities that can lead to national and international success. Past participants have gone on to win major awards including the International Dylan Thomas Prize and Wales Book of the Year.

For Huxley, and for North Wales, the selection is a proud moment—highlighting the strength of creative talent emerging from the region and offering a platform to share those voices on a global stage.

As Hay Festival prepares to welcome audiences from around the world once again, it’s clear that writers from places like Colwyn Bay are not just part of the story—they are helping to shape its future.

Households across North Wales could soon benefit from cheaper—or even free—electricity at certain times, as a new scheme looks to make the most of the region’s growing renewable energy power.

Energy bosses say the changes could be particularly significant for coastal communities, where vast offshore wind farms like Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm and Rhyl Flats Wind Farm are already generating huge amounts of electricity in the Irish Sea.

Under updated plans approved by Ofgem, households and businesses will be encouraged not just to cut back during peak times, but to use more electricity when there is an oversupply—such as on windy days or sunny weekends.

The changes form part of a revamped Demand Flexibility Service from the National Energy System Operator, designed to prevent green energy going to waste and to keep the grid stable during periods of low demand.

For North Wales, where renewable energy is a major part of the landscape, the impact could be especially noticeable. On blustery days, turbines off the coast can generate more power than is needed locally, while longer summer days also boost solar output across homes and businesses.

Instead of scaling back production, energy companies will now be able to pass on incentives to customers—encouraging them to run washing machines, charge electric vehicles or switch on appliances at times when clean energy is plentiful.

The result could mean free electricity periods, discounted tariffs, or reward schemes offering points and vouchers, depending on the supplier.

Energy firms including British Gas and Octopus Energy have already signed up, with offers expected to vary by region depending on supply and demand.

The move comes as renewable energy continues to surge. Wind power remains the UK’s largest renewable source, and with projects like Gwynt y Môr and Rhyl Flats operating just off the North Wales coast, the region is playing a key role in that green energy boom.

At the same time, 2025 was recorded as the UK’s sunniest year, with a sharp rise in rooftop solar installations—adding even more electricity into the system during daylight hours.

However, managing that abundance is becoming increasingly complex. During the summer, when demand is lower and generation is high, the grid can face periods where there is simply too much electricity.

The new scheme aims to balance that by shifting when people use power—turning North Wales homes into an active part of the energy system rather than just consumers.

For residents, it could be a simple change in routine—putting the dishwasher on at the weekend or charging devices during the day—but one that brings real savings.

And with the wind turbines continuing to turn off the North Wales coast, those breezy days could soon come with an added bonus: cheaper bills.

Care homes across North Wales are warning they may soon be forced to turn away some of the region’s most vulnerable residents as a growing staffing crisis threatens to overwhelm the sector.

In a stark intervention ahead of the 2026 Senedd election on May 7, Care Forum Wales (CFW) has sounded the alarm over tightening immigration rules, saying they are cutting off a vital supply of overseas workers who have become essential to keeping services afloat.

Representing more than 400 care providers across the private and third sectors, the organisation says the situation is being driven by a perfect storm: an ageing population, a shrinking pool of working-age people, and increasing demand for complex care, particularly for those living with dementia.

In its election manifesto, CFW makes clear that international recruitment is no longer a temporary fix but a fundamental part of the system—especially in rural communities where finding local staff has become increasingly difficult. Without it, the consequences could be severe.

Domiciliary care services, which support people in their own homes, are also under mounting pressure. Providers fear they simply do not have the capacity to meet rising demand, raising the prospect of more people going without the care they need to remain independent.

At the heart of the crisis, CFW argues, is a visa system that has become increasingly restrictive. Changes introduced by the UK Government—including limits on dependants and tougher recruitment conditions—have not only reduced the number of new applicants but are also prompting existing overseas workers to reconsider their future in Wales.

The result is a deepening workforce shortage that is already having knock-on effects across the health system, contributing to delayed hospital discharges and longer waiting times within the NHS.

CFW is now urging the next Welsh Government to follow the example set by the Scottish Government, which has stepped in with direct sponsorship for displaced overseas care workers. Backed by £500,000 in funding, Scotland’s scheme helps international staff already in the UK to relocate and continue working in social care—offering a more stable and ethical route into the profession.

CFW chair Mario Kreft has strongly rejected claims that care work is “low skilled”, describing overseas staff as highly trained professionals who played a crucial role during the pandemic and remain the backbone of frontline services.

He said the idea that international workers are a cheap alternative is simply wrong, pointing out that employers often invest heavily in recruitment and are required to pay overseas staff above the Real Living Wage. The real issue, he warned, is that not enough local people are willing to take on the demanding and highly skilled work that care roles require.

Without urgent action, Mr Kreft warned, the consequences could be “potentially horrendous”. Care homes may be forced to reduce the number of residents they support or close altogether, while domiciliary care services could scale back operations—leaving more elderly people without support.

The ripple effects would be felt far beyond social care. As staffing shortages worsen, more patients could find themselves stuck in hospital beds because there is no care available in the community, placing even greater strain on an already stretched NHS.

“This isn’t just a social care issue,” Mr Kreft said. “It’s a national crisis.”

With providers already struggling financially, the warning is clear: unless ministers act to reform visa rules and secure a sustainable workforce, Wales risks a system where vulnerable people are left without care—and the health service is pushed ever closer to breaking point.

Film star Rhys Ifans will join members of a youth-led film project in North Wales when they showcase “priceless” footage of Welsh music icons at a top festival.

The young creatives from Blaenau Ffestiniog have been chosen to show the rare archive material from Wales’ Cool Cymru era at the British Film Institute’s Rip It Up festival at the Southbank Centre in London on May 3.

The group, part of the CellB youth programme, will screen rediscovered film of some of Wales’ most influential 1990s bands, including Catatonia, Ffa Coffi Pawb and the Super Furry Animals.

Hollywood actor Rhys Ifans, who hails from Ruthin and is a long-term supporter of CellB, makes a brief cameo appearance in one of the films which features a photograph of him taken in the early 1990s.

He was briefly a member of the embryonic Super Furry Animals band before he found fame with his breakthrough role in the cult classic Twin Town which helped spark the Cool Cymru cultural revolution.

The film project, called Video Hud: Have You Seen Your Culture Baby, Standing in the Shadows?, forms part of CellB’s 10th anniversary celebrations, marking a decade since the community cinema was founded in a former police station in the heart of the town.

What began as a youth-led initiative has since grown into a major cultural hub, championing independent Welsh and international films while keeping young people firmly at its core.

The building retains many of its original features, with the auditorium located in the old court room with a cafe in another large room once used by police officers. he cinema is located in the old cells and is equipped with a state of the art projection system.

Other initiatives include creating a hostel in the superintendent's former home and opening a music rehearsal room in the garage which once housed police vehicles, along with the Pizza ‘Stiniog venture housed in a converted shipping container kitted out with three pizza ovens.

The organisation’s anniversary programme features weekly independent films, workshops, question and answer sessions with filmmakers and family activities. The film project, led by Gwenno Llwyd Till, Cian 'Clinc' Roberts, Yannick Hammer and Rhys Roberts, explores Welsh youth culture through film, music and life experience.

Gwenno, a freelance film director, said the 18 short films about late 20th Century Welsh language rock music features footage compiled from a wide range of formats shot by pioneering record producer Emyr Glyn Williams including Super 8, 16mm, 35mm, VHS-C and Digi beta.

Better known as Emyr Ankst to his many friends, he died in January 2024 from cancer aged 57 years.

CellB founder Rhys said the invitation to participate in the BFI festival was a major milestone for the young creatives but also for CellB.

“This is about young people from Blaenau taking their culture to a national stage, on their own terms. What started it here in the Welsh mountains is now part of a UK-wide project.

“The programme captures a moment when Welsh youth culture reshaped music, film and identity — a period now widely recognised as Cool Cymru.

“It brings together archive footage and live discussion, with Rhys Ifans — a defining figure of that era — joining the panel to reflect on the cultural moment that shaped a generation.”

According to Gwenno, the videos depicted a time before Welsh music was considered ‘cool’ capturing raw, self-made culture from that period.

"Emyr called the film Saunders Lewis v Andy Warhol and it's been shown at several venues across Gwynedd in recent months including CellB, Galeri Caernarfon and Storiel in Bangor,” she said.

After being founded in Aberystwyth, the Ankst label released a handful of low key cassette albums before relocating to Cardiff and becoming a more serious concern.

Until the company split into two separate parts in 1997, the label released around 80 albums.

Ankst Management was run by Alun Llwyd and Gruffudd Jones and was responsible for managing several top acts while Ankstmusik was run from Emyr's Anglesey home.

In his role as cinema co-ordinator at Pontio in Bangor Emyr was responsible for bringing international and cultural depth to the city and was a leading light in the Wales One World Film Festival (WOW).

A shorter version of the film will be shown in London along with a 20-minute video shot by the CellB group.

"Yannick and I worked with CellB to create some videos about some of the new bands in Wales. It's called Glasbren and features lots of young people, some as young as 12 who are playing music in bands. Some of them are so new they don't even have names yet. The music is fresh and inventive.”

As part of the anniversary celebrations, CellB is also planning to recreate a 1990s art installation, creating a “time capsule” from before the Cool Cymru period.

"It would be like a living museum where you can go and sit down and listen to music from different eras and we would be very grateful if anyone can offer material to help create the room," said Rhys, the bass guitarist from the iconic Welsh rock-band Anweledig.

"As part of the celebrations, CellB will host a special premiere of Effi o Blaenau and an informal Q&A session in June. Based on Gary Owen's much lauded and widely performed monodrama, Iphigenia in Splott, the movie is director Marc Evans' cinematic interpretation set against the wide open landscapes of North Wales.

CellB Cinema is supported by Film Hub Wales as part of the BFI Film Audience Network, made possible through National Lottery funding. Additional support is provided by Ffilm Cymru Wales.
